Greg McComas' Michigan Interstate St. Clair Subdivision
HO Scale
The Michigan Interstate Railroad is a proto-freelance modern Class 2 regional railroad operating in Mid-Michigan. The layout, which is set in the current era (2018+) focuses on the western 30 mile portion of the St. Clair Subdivision. Traffic is generated from online industries prevalent in Michigan such as cement, sugar beet, and agriculture and also through "bridge" traffic moving towards Chicago and Michigan's upper peninsula. Trains operate normally with 10-15 cars and second or third generation EMD locomotives. Along with merchandise traffic "The Clair" handles unit trains of aggregate, grain, and intermodal. Fogelsinger Yard in Bay City is the focal point of operations during sessions handling the classification of merchandise, locals, and yard jobs.
Greg's layout is a 12'x11" double deck built as a "shelf-layout" in a home office. He uses JMRI operations for train and car management. Operating sessions require Dispatcher, 1 Yard crew, and 2 road crews. The layout is operated using Digitrax Zephyr Xtra and LNWI allowing the use of tethered throttles or iPhones. Dispatching is DTC (Direct Traffic Control) using a large manual board to manage block authorities.
If you want to see how to fit a double deck HO layout into a small bedroom, with operations for 4, you'll want to visit Greg's layout.
